What is Baptism?
The dictionary describes baptism this way: [bap-tiz-uh m]–noun
1. a ceremonial immersion in water as an initiatory rite of the Christian church
2. a purifying experience or initiation
At NorthStar we describe it this way:
Baptism is simply a public statement of a private decision.
One of our favorite analogies is that of a wedding ring: A ring on a person’s finger doesn’t MAKE them married, it’s simply an outward symbol of their commitment to their spouse. Likewise, getting baptized doesn’t MAKE someone a Christian; rather it’s a public way to show others of a private commitment to follow Christ. Make sense?
